Becoming a Support Team Coach

How do I become a coach?

The UAB Support Team Network often holds sessions designed to teach people how to start, train, and sustain a support team for patients who are leaving their inpatient units.

The training goes into detail about:

  • How to introduce the team approach to a patient (support team friend)
  • How to make it easier for the support team friend to accept the team
  • Discover where to find people who would like to be on the team
  • Provide orientation for the team to get off to a great start
  • How to offer follow-up support to the team and team leader

We help participants understand how to set expectations and boundaries for the team, how to run the most efficient 59-minute monthly team meetings, and how to sustain and support the team to be successful. A coach can lead and organize a support team in 59 minutes or less.

Support Team Coach Training

We offer periodic coach training events at UAB Hospital. These events will be posted in the Upcoming Events section on the right side of our web page. We welcome anyone who desires to work more actively in starting support teams, whether for people soon to be discharged from their inpatient units, or in the congregation, organization, or individual relationship with which they’re involved. If you’re interested in attending one of our posted training events, please call and inform us that you’re coming. There is no charge for this service.

We also can conduct training events at your business, community, or congregational gathering place. If you are from out of state, we will bring coach training to you, for 50 or more persons from a community (there is a negotiable fee for traveling outside of Birmingham).

If you have questions, please email us at supportteams@uab.edu or call 205-934-1234. You can also use the following form to get in touch with us about leading a coach training event.
